Samuel V. Scarpino

Samuel V. Scarpino is the Chief Data Scientist and Dharma.ai and is an Assistant Professor in the Network Science Institute at Northeastern University--with appointments in Marine & Environmental Sciences, Physics, and Health Sciences. Scarpino's research spans a broad range of topics in complex systems and network science, including: infectious disease dynamics, forecasting and predictive modeling, complex network analysis, disease genomics and transcriptomics, outbreak surveillance, social networks, gene network evolution, and decision making under uncertainty. In addition, he is a strategic advisor to BioFire Diagnostics, ThinkMD, and Iliad Biotechnologies and is a co-inventor on a patented machine learning algorithm for analyzing geospatial data. Sam has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles and co-edited a forthcoming volume on whooping cough being published by Oxford University Press. He also serves as Deputy Editor at PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases.  Scarpino's publications on Ebola, whooping cough, and influenza have been covered by the New York Times, NPR, the Economist, Smithsonian Magazine, and numerous other venues.  Sam earned a Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior from The University of Texas at Austin in 2013 and was a Santa Fe Institute Omidyar Postdoctoral Fellow from 2013 - 2016.
